Loy Yang B and Interchange Gippsland have partnered for more than 25 years on projects which have helped young people with a disability to thrive. Our most recent three-year partnership has supported the ROADIES program, enabling teenagers with a disability to enjoy social and recreational activities in a fun, safe and supported environment through camps and day trips. These activities helped teens develop their independence, enjoy life experiences and make new friends, while also providing respite for their families.

Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive:

In addition to supporting ROADIES, our Production team completed a volunteer day with Interchange Gippsland to help with garden maintenance at the Morwell premises. Team members were paired with adults with a disability for these activities, which involved teaching some of them new skills, lifting the spirits of both the volunteers and participants.

“We saw some participants really bond with some of the volunteers,” Interchange Program Coordination Assistant, Sophie Johnston said.

“With this bond they were going outside their comfort zones and doing activities we usually wouldn’t see them doing. There were a lot of smiles on everyone’s faces.”

A few months after the volunteer day, Interchange visited Loy Yang B, where our workers explained to their new friends how power is made during a lunch and site tour, further strengthening the relationships formed during the volunteer day.

As well as continuing to support ROADIES program for a further three years from July 2024, we will also support Interchange’s HOP program, which provides social activities for primary school-aged students with a disability.
